Don’t Rejoice when your Enemy Suffers

Daily "Words of Wisdom" from Apply

When your enemy falls, do not rejoice; and when he is caused to stumble, may your heart not be joyful(Proverbs 24:17).

As true Christians we are supposed to be known by our love. Our conduct should come from the overflow of our pure and loving hearts. This loving conduct must be towards the good and the bad, the ones we love and those who are more challenging.  Don’t forget, Jesus tells us to love our enemies.

Today’s scripture reminds us that we are not supposed to be happy when our enemy stumbles or falls. Because we are supposed to be loving to all, we cannot laugh and be happy when someone suffers. A great example is when the famous Muslim terrorist, Osama bin Laden, was killed.  There was rejoicing in the streets of the so called Christian nation of America. This was the wrong conduct because we are supposed to be sad when someone dies, even if that person is our enemy.

So the next time you see your enemy fall on his face, don’t rejoice, but be there to pick him up. Maybe you can win him over into the Kingdom of God through your unexpected loving conduct.
