Fear God, Not Men

Daily "Words of Wisdom" from Apply Wisdom.com

The conclusion of the matter, everything having been heard, is: Fear the [true] God and keep his commandments. For this is the whole [obligation] of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

As true Christians, we are supposed to fear God. This fear for God is more like respect… a respect for who He is and how powerful and loving He is. Ultimately, we love Him so much that we fear ever letting Him down. And so this fear of letting Him down leads us towards obedience, obedience to His bible.

The second implication of “Fearing God” is that we don’t fear man.  Jesus says in John 5:41 that “I don’t accept praise from man.” This is because men are selfish and change opinions like the wind.  A perfect example is when the same people who were singing “hosanna in the highest”[1] when Jesus arrived to Jerusalem during what the church calls “Psalm Sunday” were a week later yelling “crucify him.”[2]  Few men are good, but most are selfish and could care less about God. So don’t accept their praise or approval.

Do you fear letting Yahweh down? And does this fear inspire you to be obedient to what He says?
