Bad Company Corrupts Good Habits

Daily "Words of Wisdom" from Apply Wisdom.com

“Do not be misled. Bad associations spoil useful habits” (1 Corinthians 15:33).

Bad company corrupts good character. What a clear scripture, so easy to understand. If you hang out with bad associates, all of your useful habits or character will be spoiled.

All people in your life should fall into 2 categories:

  • Those who encourage you to be more like Jesus and glorify Yahweh in accordance with biblical principles and
  • Those who do not encourage you to be more like Jesus and glorify Yahweh in accordance with biblical principles.

Let’s simplify this dichotomy by labeling them good associates and bad associates.

It is good for you to become friends with good associates. It is foolish to become friends with bad associates. The bible makes it clear that good associates can become friends and bad associates must be ministry opportunities.

So the question becomes how should I interact with bad associates? The answer is to be “salt” and “light” (Matthew 5:13 & 14). But being salt and light doesn’t mean tolerating their sinful behavior. You must do ministry, not hint at or give approval to their unbiblical lives.

Perhaps there is wisdom in the non-scriptural proverb “show me who your friends are and I will show you who you are.”
