Only Get Appropriately Angry

“YOU heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You must not murder; but whoever commits a murder will be accountable to the court of justice.’ However, I say to YOU that everyone who continues wrathful with his brother will be accountable to the court of justice; but whoever addresses his brother with an unspeakable word of contempt will be accountable to the Supreme Court; whereas whoever says, ‘You despicable fool!’ will be liable to the fiery Ge·henʹna” (Matthew 5:21-22).

God lovingly gave us a full range of human emotions.  Although we are supposed to be known for our love, sometimes it may be appropriate to express your anger.  Jesus expresses his anger several times in the bible.   Most people easily remember when Jesus overthrows the money changers at the temple. But when Jesus rebukes the religious leaders to their face he clearly is angry at their unrighteousness and hypocrisy. It is very insightful that Jesus is only angry in the bible when confronting the hypocrisy of the faker religious leaders. Modern religious leaders are just as hypocritical as the Pharisees of Jesus’s day. Today’s scripture reminds us that although there may be appropriate times to be angry, we are not to remain angry. So don’t be afraid of anger, but keep it in check. Make sure it is caused because of injustice or unrighteousness, not because of selfish reasons. And then get over it, quickly, and go back to being ruled by the law of love.
